Impulse noise was coded as a binary measure, either 1 (employee had been exposed to impulse noise) or 0 (employee had not been exposed to impulse noise).
* Exposure to sudden, very loud noises (e.g. shooting) as an indicator of exposure to impulse noise.
Of these, 498 (99.6%) provided information on noisy leisure activities they were involved in, for how long and how often (e.g. raced cars, 2hrs every month between 1967 and 1975), if any impulse noise occurred, and whether any hearing protection was worn during the activity.
